Highlights From My First Month: Part Two

28 augusti 2015

Mpume, María, Anabel, Jess, Hannah and I had lunch at Västgöta Nation. They were serving a vegetarian soup, a cabbage and apple salad, and some sort of bread; it was so delicious. The nation has a nice outside seating area and it was such a nice day to be outdoors. After lunch, we went on a photo scavenger hunt. The task was to find the places in Uppsala on a given list and take a creative group photo in front of each. So, we came up with the idea of posing as the letters of “Uppsala”.

We later went to Ikea. Let me tell you, it is so much better to go there with friends.

That night, Hannah and I went to our first Smaka at Kalmars nation, where they serve specifically vegetarian and vegan food. It was actually way fancier than we thought it would be; the tables were set with tablecloths and candles, and people had reservations. Luckily, it was quiet enough that we didn’t need one. We both ordered the spaghetti with mushrooms and a sweet potato sauce, and for dessert I had a caramelized apple pie; just mmmmmmmmmm.

My friends and I went on a Sustainable Budget Tour organized by Östgöta Nation in the afternoon. Our tour guide, who was really funny and kooky, led us around the city pointing out places that were affordable and resourceful for students. It turned out to be really helpful. I especially liked the secondhand shops. Here are some random photos from that day:

Later, we walked around some more and checked out the English Bookshop (good place to know if you want to read in English because most of the booksellers only have Swedish). We also found The American Food & Gift Shop, which was really funny. They had stuff like poptarts, dinosaur oatmeal, and Aunt Jemima’s Syrup.DSC01085 DSC01084 DSC01083 DSC01082 DSC01079 DSC01080 DSC01081

This was also the day I signed up for my first nation, Norrlands. =)

Just as an overall note, the planned events for Welcome Week were really great and I’m so glad the International Committee organizes such things. It’s such an awesome way to meet people and learn about the city, and it’s just plain fun!

Now, this was a great day. A whole group of us went to the Botanical Gardens for a picnic and walk-around. We all brought some things for lunch; I even cooked up some Ikea veggie balls (yum). We found a nice spot to eat, relax, and play around on the grass. It was such a nice day out, too. A friend of ours invited some others and I ended up meeting a student from Greece, another from England, and even someone from Boston, Massachusetts!

Exploring the grounds was like living in a Jane Austen story; everything was so majestic. The greenhouses were really cool, but also very warm (haha). We were told this would be a good place to visit during the winter time.

Later on that night, I went to Norrlands pub with Jess, María, Hannah, and my buddy Hadrien. I actually had my first city biking experience that night. What an adventure that was….

I made my first official visit to the main university library, the Carolina Rediviva. The inside was so cool. They had plenty of reading rooms with large windows, historical busts ,old-style study desks, and spiral staircases going up the stacks. It was easy to stay there for hours on end.

I also went to find the academic building for my first course, Cognition & Learning. Blåsenhus is the building for the psychology and education departments.

I was so excited for my first class that I couldn’t sleep past seven. I even biked to Blåsenhus like a true Uppsalian. On an informative point, when a course is scheduled as on the hour (t.e. 9.00) it actually starts fifteen minutes after (9.15). This is a standard rule for the courses because of the old tradition that when the cathedral bells would ring, people knew they had fifteen minutes to get to wherever they needed. How helpful is that! Anyway, there were a surprising amount of Americans in my course; almost the majority of about fifteen people. One girl, from Florida, I actually hang out with quite a bit now. We started off as study buddies, because she is very well-versed in psychology (well, it is her major). I also had my new Greek friend, Dimitra, in my course.

I spent a fair amount of time in the Blåsenhus library because we were assigned to read an entire psychology textbook for the next week; not easy, my friends.

When I finally escaped, I made my way to the English Park (another set academic buildings) for my Swedish placement exam. I met Hannah there because she also took Swedish previously.

Only eventful thing for today was that I joined Kalmars nation. Yay! I love what they have going on and their general atmosphere.

Oh! And we made our first visit to the Systembolaget! The Systembolaget is the government-run alcohol shop. According to good ol’ Wikipedia, any alcohol higher than 3.5% is sold here and only here (unless you buy drinks directly from a bar). There are a few of these stores spread throughout the city and you have to be at least twenty years old to make a purchase.

We celebrated Hannah’s birthday at another Smaka. This time, however, it was super crowded.; good thing we made a reservation. The poor staff members were so overwhelmed and it took quite awhile to get out food. But we had great company; Hannah’s boyfriend was also visiting from Germany, so it was really nice to meet him. And we got Hannah a Swedish moose stuffed animal; her first souvenir!
